Indie Indy Independent Record Label Owner

Breaking Into and Succeeding as an Indie Indy Independent Record Label Owner
Starting an Indie Indy Independent Record Label
Signing Indie Indy Independent Artist

Independent record labels have been around as long as there have been records to sell. Fedor Chaliapan, a singer for the Russian Imperial Opera, “signed on” with Fred Gaisberg and the Gramophone Company in Milan in 1902, recording a series of 4-minute 10-inch discs’ cutting edge technology at the time. Since then, indies have persisted alongside the major labels through various cycles of success, sometimes marginalized, sometimes feted.

Consolidations among the majors have relegated indies to the fringe, only to see the indies surge up again a few years later, leaving the majors to seek the road less traveled. One such indie upswelling took place in the 1960s, before the latest round of consolidations got started. Fortunately, recent changes in technology have opened the field to the indies once more.

Starting in the 1990s, home recording equipment has become more widespread and less expensive. Personal computers have found their way into the majority of homes. Who doesn’t know someone with a CD/DVD recorder, or have one themselves?

Recording equipment, just like home computing equipment, is decreasing in both size and price all the time. You can put together a studio in your own home, or in a rented office space, for surprisingly little money. Many successful indie record labels started as home businesses.

Fully-equipped studios for rent are also available in most cities. Priced at approximately $150 and up per hour, you can use a studio near you without having to spend a fortune establishing your own.

Being an indie record label is also very portable, especially in this Internet age. You can take orders over the Internet, even distribute songs in MP3 format, which makes it easier than ever for a street musician, small-time rock band, or indie label owner to make music available to the masses.

A virtual indie Renaissance is going on even as you are reading these words at the moment because space, volume and distance are no longer obstacles.

If you’re concerned because you are not an artists, don’t sweat. In fact, not being a musician can in some ways be an advantage. Creative types often have to work hard to develop that mental divide between doing art and doing business. If you’re not an artist yourself, you might find that the mindset of a business owner comes more easily to you.

Now if you’re concerned about the limited market of the genre you’re passionate about, read on. Your perspective probably needs shifting because your label’s first release doesn’t need to go platinum for you to stay in business.

Because you’re an indie, your artists will see more profit per disk sold than they would if they had a deal with a major label. This means your business’ Return of Investment (ROI) is higher than major record labels’.

Major record labels usually pay not much more than $1 per copy of record sold, while an indie pays up to $5 per copy in royalties (if you are also the artist, your profit can be even higher than this). The key is finding a constant, reliable market for your records, not necessarily a huge one. Identify your target audience, promote where your target audience is, and produce in numbers that reflect that audience’s size.

Today, starting an indie record label is much easier than before. With sufficient preparation on what you’re going to encounter, you should be able to break into and succeed in this highly lucrative field with confidence.
