Breaking Into and Succeeding as a Disc Jockey
Starting a Mobile DJ Business
What are the differences between a "regular" DJ and a mobile DJ?
There is actually not a whole lot different between the two, other than the mobile DJ is freelance and works wherever and whenever they are needed.
A regular DJ general is employed by a radio station or dance club and has a job every night at the same spot, where he is expected to play a certain genre of music and entertain a crowd. The mobile DJ on the other hand travels where the action is and brings the music to the people. They generally do not necessarily have any specific music they specialize in, but take requests from their clients and play what they want to hear.
The mobile DJ as the name refers to is not tied down to any particular place, music genre, work schedule or clientele. They have the freedom to pick and choose their jobs and work around their schedule. There is a mixture of mobile DJ’s that work both full-time at this career and have it as a second job for the evenings and weekends.
Most mobile DJs truly love their craft and consider it as much of a hobby as it is a career. Some mobile DJ’s mix their roles as a regular DJ and a mobile one, working at a radio station or club and then also having a mobile set-up to bring to parties and events.
If you're unconvinced whether your limited "musical talent" or "musical experience" would fit you to become a DJ, let us put it this way: they are not required.
Most DJs today do not have any musical experience at all; you do not need to in order to be successful. But you should have a general love of music. You do not have to be into any particular type of music, but enjoy the sounds and its ability to bring people together to have a good time. A rather big part of the business of a mobile DJ is running your business smart and effectively, which is exactly what this
eGuide is designed to give you a leg up on.
The mobile DJ is often times a wonderful career for those that wished they had the abilities to play a musical instrument. This is by far the easiest way to become a musical performer, interacting with your audience and playing the popular tunes that everybody wants to hear.
All of the guilty pleasures of a professional musical performer and you don’t even need to have one ounce of musical ability. Sounds almost too good to be true, but it is not. People have been enjoying this guilty pleasure for decades, with the real popularity of the mobile DJ appearing in the 70s, right along with the upsweep of disco
fanatic
Do you need to have business-saviness to start a mobile DJ business?
If you do not have any interest in the business end of mobile DJ work, you can join a talent agency as a DJ talent and let them do the work for you for a percentage of your profits. Let me just say however that it is not difficult to start and run your own mobile DJ business. Ten to twenty percent of your profits going to a talent agency for advertising, bookings and invoice collections can really add up.
You will save money if you can do it yourself. You will need a few basic electronics, a vehicle to transport it in, a wide selection of music and a good business program to keep track of your expenses, invoices and income.
That is about all you will need to get you started. So don’t just sign up with an agent until you have had the opportunity to think about running your own business. There are many aspects to working with an agent that will be to your advantage and disadvantage. Depending on your business sense and desire for complete self-employment you may or may not want somebody else taking care of the business end of things. The decision of representation from a talent agent will be further explained in
the eGuide.
Do you know?
Working at party events is a straight $150 a gig that will last on average four hours.
Weddings can be substantially more per gig; approximately $350 to $3,500 according to
The American Disc Jockey Association.
About 90% of many mobile DJ’s work is weddings. This is easy to see when you consider that 72% of today’s brides will be using a mobile DJ as their entertainment choice. According to a survey in 2005, Weddings are pulling in $125 Billion a year at an average cost of up to $30,000 per wedding.
According to statistics found by the ADJA, 63% of all guests at a wedding will not remember what was served for dinner, but will remember the entertainment. Even more surprising, is that 80% of a weddings success is said to be dependant on the entertainment itself.
According to the St. Louis Bride & Groom, 65% of couples who went with a live band say that if they had it to do all over again they would have chosen a mobile DJ.
In 2004, the U.S. Department of Labor
showed that there were 69,000 jobs held in the area of announcers for radio and television. Of these DJs, their average earnings were between $7.43 and $16.81 an hour with the lowest paid 10% being less that $6.16 and the highest paid over $27.61.
